THE UNBLINDING is a series of self portraits created over a span of seven years, depicting an ogbanje's progression from unawareness to clarity around its nature as an embodied spirit. The first set of self-portraits is a diptych of paintings created by the ogbanje in its initial state of 'blindness'. The second is an autobiographical novel, FRESHWATER (Grove Atlantic, February 2018), in which the ogbanje articulates details of embodiment and ascribes legibility to its self. The third set is a collection of video art that uses ritual and performance to render multiple self-aware iterations of the embodied spirit.
